It’s been an emotionally tumultuous week for residential solar power users in South Africa.

First, last week, there was despair, following a report that Eskom wanted to charge solar users a “surcharge” of more than R900 per month. Many solar users are angry, claiming they are being penalized for not using Eskom’s power – after forking out thousands of panels and installations to save on energy costs.

Then, on Monday night, excitement: President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that there are plans to encourage solar PV users to feed electricity back into the grid, and that Eskom will pay households for their excess power.
